Pedestrian Safety
The TPO is committed to improving the safety of pedestrians through its projects and programs. Understanding what street environments are more or less safe for pedestrians is a key component of that effort. Dr. Chris Cherry, associate professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UTK, is working with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) on a research project looking at the aspects of street design that lead to increased risk for pedestrian crashes. His research team compiled data on hundreds of crashes across the state of Tennessee to try to determine where funding should best be spent to improve pedestrian safety. Dr. Cherry shared a presentation on his work at the February 2014 TPO Technical Committee meeting.
