Your Presence is Requested Some public meetings held by the Knoxville Regional TPO are well attended, but others draw only a handful of people. Ideas on how to generate more public interest are welcome as the TPO gets ready to update its Public Involvement Procedures Plan this summer. Transportation issues can seem to appear suddenly before the public, when in fact, plans to address these issues have been in the works for a long time. For this reason, the TPO would like to create a process that puts a priority on active and continuous involvement in all phases of transportation planning. Ways for citizens to participate include taking part in various committees or being added to the TPO mailing list to keep abreast of new projects. The public also is encouraged to visit the TPO website on a regular basis at www.knoxtrans.org. Citizen participation is a main component of the 1998 Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, through which the TPO receives federal transportation funds.
